The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
