Working Life of Salary Not Enough for UK Labor Force to Join Richest 10%, Analysis Says

Based on fresh research, the average worker in the UK would have to work over five decades of income to achieve the net worth of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.

Expanding Wealth Gap Over Time

This research examined net worth data from the Covid pandemic period and found that in 2006-08, it would have taken nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to reach the richest segment of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist part of the report commented: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would still not be able to attain the highest level of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Wealth Divide

The study found that the gap between the assets of the average person and an individual in the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the mid-2000s, but had widened to £1.3 million in inflation-adjusted terms by the pandemic years.

The researcher continued: "These gaps are doubly concerning as wealth mobility in Britain is low – people that start life affluent tend to stay wealthy, and vice versa."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Even with the wealth gap growing in absolute terms, the portion of overall assets in the UK owned by the richest households – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s era," according to the study.

Over this timeframe, complete net worth in the UK rose substantially from thrice the annual GDP, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Economic Disparity

Referred to as "passive" increases, through growing real estate costs and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity over the past decade, according to the analysis.

These increases typically went to senior citizens with real estate, the study demonstrates – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The average wealth gap between thirty-somethings and those in their early 60s more than doubled in actual value, from £135,000 in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.

Area-Based Variations

There were also stark area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in the pandemic period amounting to £290,000 in south-east England, where real estate values have typically increased quickly, versus 110 thousand pounds in the NE of England.

COVID Era Impact

During the pandemic, when numerous employees were supported by the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the information reveals numerous families were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes performed significantly better, though. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the two years pre-pandemic. In contrast, the median home in the highest income quintile saw their available funds rise by £4,200," the study reveals.
